WHAT IS SALSA ON2 ?
The difference between dancing "On 2" versus "On 1" may seem subtle at first, but is significant. A simplified explanation is that dancing "On2" is like dancing with the percussion of the music, while dancing "On1" is like dancing with the melody. In any case, my experience is that salseros who become proficient at dancing "On2" are reluctant to go back to "On1."
Over an 8-beat pattern, the dancers take a total of six steps. With alternating feet the steps take place on beats 1-2-3, then 5-6-7, then repeats. No steps are taken on beats 4 and 8. This creates pausing in the motion and nice syncopation. For beginners, doing this standing in place is a good way to start, because it does not really matter where the steps are taken just that they are made somewhere. Leads typically start with their left foot on beat one, while follows start with their right. Moving to the music, the dancer should hear the Conga slap on the beats 2 and 6. This is a subtle high pitched sound and an upbeat accent that is always present and helps give the dance its swing.
WHAT IS NEW YORK STYLE SALSA ?
Technically "New York Style" is a type of "Salsa On2" but not all On2 styles are New York Style, but since seemingly 99% of On2 is done in NY Style, the terms are fairly interchangable. NY Style is distinguishable by being a "slot dance" like West Coast Swing. Note: "Mambo" and "Modern Mambo" are also terms that are sometimes used in place of NY Style or On2.

Mitch and Marion currently teach introductory level group classes at Copa, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings. Classes are open to anyone at any level at anytime, no partner required. The cost is typically $5 - $7 and is usually followed by a night of DJed Salsa Music.
